Day Dreaming

Do you ever wish
you could click your heels three times and
be transported to another place.
Well, that's how I'm feeling today
It's Friday and Memorial Day Weekend is coming up
and I so want to hit the junkin trail

Sometimes I wish the Canton Texas Flea Market was more than just once a month, or maybe that I lived closer and not almost 3 hours away and could go back several days in a row (like several of my friends do, you know who you are, don't make me say your names *wink*)

Anyways, can you tell from this picture just how much stuff there is at Canton and this doesn't even cover a fraction of just how big this place really is:

And, come next Thursday
 I'll be headed here
to shop to my hearts content.
There is just mile after mile of the best stuff
you could ever imagine you'd want to find and then some.

Or maybe I could go on a trip with these girls and be transported to Paris:

Oh to be in Paris in the summer!  If only I could be brave enough to get on an airplane.

Then, there's this place, just magical:

Gosh I so want to go shop here, really bad, did I say "really bad".  And, the sad (or good) thing is that my sister lives less than 2 hours from these guys and I can't for the life of me talk her into going.  She's says it's too far.  I guess she doesn't realize that I drive hours to go junkin. Of course, it has something to do with she's NOT into antiques.

Ok, moving right along.  I could be transported to this place too.  I mean it's the beach, who wouldn't want to spend a day collecting shells and sea glass:

And Sue Balmforth decorated this place, who wouldn't want to be here.  And, I must add if you live any where near Venice California and you've never been to her shop, Bountiful, all I can say is SHAME ON YOU!  What are you waiting for.  Go for me and then send me pics.  Her style is just timeless.

Here's Sue's place:

The pool is very inviting with the candles.

Even this area she decorated seems relaxing:

(source unknown)

What's your favorite place to go to escape or relax.  Do you have any plans this weekend.  My boys and girl will all be home, so I'm sure they'll be entertaining me.  We always have the best time.

Happy Friday and Memorial Day Weekend to you all!

Swedish White Wednesday

Welcome to another one of Kathleen's fabulous White Wednesday's.  I wanted to show you what my new obsession is, the Jeanne d'Arc Living Magazine.  If you haven't discovered this magazine you are in for a real treat.  The only problem is if you want a copy they can't be found in bookstores, you have to order them online.  I have two sources that I know of for ordering these, so if you are interested email me and I'll share with you.  I know I've seen other sites for ordering the magazine, but these two are my favorite.

Let's start off with the first picture, I love the angel wings on this dress form:

Of course the name S'te Therese drew me in too!

This image is part of my header photo:

I would love to have a dressing area such as this one.

Something about St. Mary statues that I love:

Here's another great statue and garden pot:

Look how pretty everything looks here:

Don't you love this dining room:

What about the pretty white tones in this bedroom:

Of course, I'm always looking for old lace, isn't this pretty:

Hope you all have a great Wednesday and be sure and check out Kathleen's blog for more White Wednesday participants.

May 25th ~ Let's Celebrate!

Today is my Birthday!

Yippee, Hooray, May 25th, my most favorite time of the year besides my families birthday's of course.

As I get older (hopefully wiser in some aspects of my life),
I am grateful to celebrate this day!
So, I was thinking, what can I do for you,
how can I in a small way say thanks
for the sweet words you leave me so often,
for the kind emails you send me that seems to always lift my spirits and make my day
and while you may never leave me a comment, you let me know you are reading what I am passionate about.

So, today I wake up a year older
(it's just a number, right, and you are only as old as you feel),
a glorious day for sure!

I want to give you a gift to say thanks for making my life richer, fuller, and just because....it's my birthday and I want to do this!

So, you tell me. What would you like?
A year subscription to a favorite magazine, there are still some great ones out there, or
Every month would you like to enjoy your favorite coffee at your favorite coffee house and just enjoy it all to yourself, or
would you like a spa day, a day just to relax and enjoy yourself, or
Would you like a gift certificate and you can shop for yourself?

Here's what you need to do:
Tell me what you would like (yes, you have to leave me a comment)
Or, if you don't have a blog, send me an email and I'll post it here, my email is garden_antqs@yahoo.com
That's it!

I'll select one person on June 1st (another great Birthday celebration will be done on this day)!
This is one of my favorite cakes, for the recipe click here.

He Fought The Good Fight of Faith

Doug never gave up his fight with cancer, but he passed this afternoon.  He wouldn't even miss the blog party this past Spring:

Many of you may have known Doug from having shopped with him in the Bar W field.  He and Renee set up in the field together for many years.  You'll so be missed in Warrenton, it won't be the same without you.  We'll see you on the other side my friend!

Nothing Uncommon Here

Each time I get the opportunity to stop and visit Uncommon Objects in Austin, I am always just blown away at their displays and merchandise they have.  These guys have some of the most unique things I've seen around.

Well, just take a look for yourself.  This was Donnie Volkart's area.  Love all the birds:

I thought of Anne when I saw the huge hornet's nest.  It was really cool.

I guess stuffed birds are here to stay for a while.  I love to decorate with them and this rooster was fabulous:

Really different than when we decorated with chickens and roosters in the 90's.

Another delightful display:

More great things:

This display of bottles caught my eye:

I'm always on the look out for unique ones.

What a great trophy:

Cute shoes could be found in Steve Wiman's space:

For those that don't know Steve, he's the owner of Uncommon Objects.  Here's another view of his space:

This was Mickie and Brandy's space:

Great columns and lighting.

This is Janette's space:

I always enjoy her displays.

More of Janette's things:

This display of pretties was at the front of the store:

I hope the next time you are in Austin Texas you'll stop by for a visit.  It's worth the two hours you'll spend in there.  No kidding, by the time you see it all, you'll want to go back again just to make sure you didn't miss anything.  You can visit their site here.  Happy Friday to you all!

White Wednesday in Boerne

Today is another one of Kathleen's White Wednesday's and I couldn't wait to show you this shop I found in Boerne Tx, Topsy Turvy, for this post.  Now, while normally I wouldn't be drawn to a shop such as this one, because it's a children's shop and since I no longer have small children anymore nor do I have any grand kids, but as soon as I peeked into the windows, I most definately had to check it out

Here's what caught my eye:

This beautiful white dreamy display with such pretty linens and soaps too.

I really loved that the columns and architectual pieces seemed to be just all piled together:

There were lots of pretty linens to choose from:

But what really caught my eye were the book pages that were used like a border.

Remember in my last post I mentioned that if the windows were displayed well I'd be more curious to check out a shop, well this definately was true for this one.  Not only were their windows displayed so appealing but the outside was decorated just as cute.  The minute I walked in and saw all the vintage things that were being used, well I wanted to stay longer just to check them out.  Even though the children's items were really displayed so pretty, it was just such a cute shop.  They had chippy white shutters and columns, mirrors, and beds, and I loved the awnings, wooden ones too, which are so hard to find.

Here was one of the awnings displayed in the store:

I believe there were three of them.

I also really liked this display above the entry way:

Here was a cute chippy white cabinet:

Filled with more pretty things.

See what I mean about the outside of the building:

This was jasmine I believe that was growing on the arbor.  It smelled so good as you walked past it.

Frank, the owner, sent me the nicest email before I even did this post on his shop.  One of his staff had seen my header of his shop and had told him about it.  He mentioned he is actually moving back into the Vintage Bliss building (which is actually known as the Staffel Building), sometime in June.

He said he previously had two shops, Topsy Turvy and Cielo (which in English means Heaven).  Cielo was a home decorator shop in the same building that Vintage Bliss is in.  He said he's decided to close the Topsy Turvy kid's shop and re-open the home decorator shop, which should open sometime in July.  His new vision is to offer slip covered pieces with European soaps, and decorative accessories.  I can't wait to go back and check out his new shop.  I'll keep you posted when it will open so that you too can check it out.

Happy Wednesday to you all and be sure and check out Kathleen's blog for all that are participating in the White Wednesday post.  You can also check out the Topsy Turvy's website here.

Boerne Tx Shops

While we were walking around Boerne Tx this past Saturday looking at the different shops there (and there were lots), I found several that not only appealed to me from the outside but were equally as pretty inside too.  For me, if a shop is appealing from the outside I'm more likely to go in.  If they have windows and the displays don't draw me in, then there's a slim chance I'll go in.  I know I'm sure I'm missed visiting some really great shops, but I think if the owners don't take the time to draw me in, then there's probably not much I'll be drawn to inside.

Here's one shop that caught my eye, Good and Co.:

Their windows were cute, simple, but appealing.

Here's the other side of the windows:

This was a tall screen they had proped up on a table:

Loved the signs at the check out counter:

I'm guessing they were French, but not sure.

A really tall screen:

A French book for you:

Their displays were well thought out and planned:

A cute bed by the window with a vintage ticking mattress:

The lady working said the owner used to set up at Round Top.  The shop is located at:  248 South Main Street, Boerne, TX, (830) 249-6101.

While walking down the street, I came across this shop:

Buy Buy Birdie Antiques

Isn't that a cute name and it looked so cute from the outside, but when I walked in the open door there was nothing.  The shop owner next door said the shop had closed.  This name sounds so familiar to me and I thought maybe the owner may have set up at one of the shows.  If you know what happened to this shop or if it moved, please let me know.  Boerne really is a cute town and it's filled with lots of shops.  We also found a really great place to eat Mexican Food, Mague's Cafe on N. Main, that yes had authentic Mexican Food with homemade tortillas.  You know my husband was loving this.  Tomorrow I'll take you to one more shop in Boerne.

Here's a preview:

You'll be surprised what kind of shop it really is.

Vintage Bliss

This past weekend we took a trip to go see Vintage Bliss in Boerne Tx since they will be closing their doors probably after Memorial Day weekend.  I found several things here and wanted to show you what they have left.  If you are in the area you should stop by before they close.

When I walked into Vintage Bliss, this was one of the side rooms that you could see from the front room.  I just loved the color and texture of the walls in this room:

The aqua blue color was so pretty against the white items.

Another view of the blue room:

The cool blue tone is so relaxing.

Cute white fence with lights:

This room was one of the back rooms:

Again, loved the texture and brownish color of the wall covering that was coming off.

To work in this store would have been pure bliss.  This is the front room:

Another view of the front room:

This was really cute above the check out counter:

Of course you all know how much I loved this awning:

There were more cute shops in Boerne, that I'll feature tomorrow.  Don't forget they close their doors at the end of the month, so if you are in this area you should check out what's left.  Also, a shop that I'll feature on Wednesday is moving into this shop, so you don't want to miss seeing it.  I hope you all had a great Monday.

The Month of May

(pictures of me taken in front of my aunt's house ~ I guess even then I liked being outside)

I always looked forward to the month of May when I was growing up.  The days that seemed to go on forever, as if time had stood still.  Running barefoot in the grass, making mud pies, sleeping with the windows open and hearing the bull frogs at night and staying out late in the evening until I could see the fire flies.  Either my aunt or my grandmother would come looking for me.  I was an explorer, still am, and wanted to see all there was to see on my aunt and uncle's place.  Growing up in the country was just such a wonderful experience, you can read some of my previous posts I've done on them here and here.  There were the grasshoppers you could catch and put in a jar or a frog or two.  Of the course if you saw a snake, my aunt would say, "you better run!"  I was always on the lookout for snakes because I was so scared of them.  I didn't have a care in the world.

Getting back to why I loved the month of May so, I couldn't wait for this month to get here.  It meant that school was nearing the end and summer would start, usually right around my birthday and then there was Memorial Day.  Yes, this usually marked the beginning of heaven for me.  I'd have my bags packed and I was ready to go come Friday afternoon, I couldn't wait for school to end.  We'd load up in the car and down the road we'd go.  My dad was a fast driver, even then, he pushed the speed limit.  So I knew that we'd be there in no time, even though we were only 12 miles from paradise.

As soon as we got there, I'd run into my aunt's house, the screen door would slam (that's if I came in the front door, but usually we'd come in the side door).  I'd actually start opening the car door before my dad even put it into park, I was always getting in trouble for this and at times to this day I'm still guilty of this (drives my husband crazy).

There was the smell of home as you walked into the house, just undescribable.  I still can smell the fresh coffee that was making in the morning, even though I didn't drink coffee then, I loved the smell of it brewing.  Then, there were either cookies or a pie or a cake that had been baked, you could smell it.  In the morning, there were fresh biscuits baking, and the bacon that smelled so good it normally would wake me up.  The thick slab bacon that my uncle had made from the pig he took to the meat market.  My uncle would have his over easy eggs (yuk!), none for me thank you.  I'll take mine scrampled I'd say to my aunt.  We'd always have pure cane syrup in the house (the kind that came in a silver tin can), I haven't seen any of this in a while.  You could mix the syrup with butter (now, don't give me a frown, try it and you'll be glad you did) and then dip your fresh biscuits in it until the butter melted, oh my the memories of this.

Come Saturday, this was a busy day.  My uncle would be up before the crack of dawn and have the fresh vegetables he'd picked ready for my aunt to cook and start canning them for the winter months.  He'd have to start early before the sun came out and started to heat up the day.  We'd have fresh new potatoes (these were just red potatoes and I'm not sure why they always called them "new" potatoes), green beans, black eyed peas (that we'd sit on the porch in the evening taking them out of their hulls), corn (there's none been any sweeter than his), okra, tomatoes that were so good, bell peppers that usually were planted next to the jalapeno peppers so they had some heat to them, green onions that were almost as big as my fist (I never saw a small green onion then), turnip greens, and then he'd always have to experiment with a new item.  Before he died he had always wanted to plant peanuts, he had a huge crop that year.

Once all the produce was brought in and he'd weeded the garden, my uncle would come in and freshen up and then off to the small town where he'd get his weekly haircut.  I used to always love to tag along.  We'd drive down the road in his pickup truck, with the windows down, and I was just watching the houses as we'd pass by.  There was always someone he knew and we'd wave as we went by.  We'd arrive in the small town, he'd get his hair cut, and then back to house we'd go.

As I grew up, he decided on one of these trips that it was time for me to learn to drive.  I was 12.  Oh my the excitement that I was going to be behind the wheel was almost uncontainable.  He'd sit right next to me in case he had to quickly take over.  We didn't wear seat belts back then, never even occurred to us to wear one and of course the thought of a cell phone, well there was no thought of these anyways.  My aunt and uncle still had a party line (if you don't know what this is, this is where they shared their phone line with usually about four other people, so if you picked up the phone to call someone, usually someone else was talking on the line and you had to wait your turn), unless you were like me and asked them could you please use the line.  Well, that's another story for another time.  Getting back to the drive, my uncle commented one day that now that I had learned to drive, I could now drive them into town.  This didn't take many trips to learn, I think after about the second time I was on my own.

They only went into town on Saturdays.  Yes, once a week.  Can you imagine that?  So many of us go to the store almost daily.  So after the produce was picked and we drove down to get his haircut, we knew once we returned my aunt would be ready to "go to town".  This was all done usually before noon.  She'd have a light lunch ready and then it was time to go.  We'd load up in her car and off to town we'd go.  Driving back into town seemed different when I was with them.  We go to the local "Piggly Wiggly".  This name still makes me laugh.  Have any of you ever heard of this grocery store?  Here was their logo picture:

Once we returned home that afternoon, I'd help my aunt start to make dinner and get the Sunday lunch ready for the next day.  We always made some kind of dessert because you never knew who would come home with you on Sunday and this had to be ready.  This was one of our all time favorite cakes to make.  I know the pastors never complained and neither did we.  This was a special cake that was made during the summer time when either the pastor was joining us for Sunday lunch or to take to dinners on the ground with other churches:

(I found this image here but this is exactly the way I remember this cake looking)
 FRESH STRAWBERRY CAKE

1 pkg. white cake mix
1 sm. box strawberry Jello
1/2 c. water
1 c. oil
4 eggs
1 t. vanilla
1/2 c. fresh strawberries crushed

ICING:
1 stick butter
1 box powdered sugar
1/2 c. strawberries, drained
1 t. vanilla

Mix cake in order and bake at 325 degrees until done, about 1 hour. Mix butter and powdered sugar, then add strawberries and vanilla.  You can a small amount of milk if you want to thin it out.  Put icing on cake after it has cooled.

Please let me know if your family makes this recipe.

Warrenton Tx reminds me so much of the country place where I grew up.  I guess that's why I love this town so.  I hope you enjoy the stories I occassionally tell of my childhood.  I know I really enjoy reliving them.  Hope you all have a great weekend!

White Wednesday in Tyler

It's time for another one of Kathleen's White Wednesday so I thought I'd feature a great shop in Tyler Tx that I've featured before.  When I was there last week for the HEAP Show, I couldn't resist stopping at Ethel's Shop, Ethel's Treasure Quest.  I found a few treasures with her and she had this really pretty garden statue that I almost wish I'd have gotten:

You just never know what you'll find there.  Her displays and merchandise change consistently.  Look at this great couch:

You can find lamps, small columns, tables, garden ornaments, a bit of it all:

You can also find chandeliars:

She has dishes, birdbaths, and just about anything you are looking for:

Be sure and check her out the next time you are in Tyler.  I'm sure you'll find a treasure or two.

You can find Ethel's shop at 731 N. Bois D'Arc in Tyler, or call her at 903/830-8173
☼  You can also find her at Winnie & Tulula's
Or look for her in Canton in the Pavilians

I had to show one of the things I bought from her, this awesome wood column with ornate detail:

See what I mean:

I think for now this one is a keeper.

You can see the table full of things I've found during my road trips.  I'll do a post on these things later this week.  Happy Wednesday to you all.

Hico Vendor's

You've seen the preview of who all was there and I know you want to see more.  It really seemed like a great show, there were so many people there and I was wishing I had been able to go out on Friday since the booths I stopped at seemed picked over.  Here's what was left when I was there on Saturday:

Let's start off with Mickie and Brandy's space.  I know while talking to several of my friends there, they were wanting to construct walls for the show and I think several of them used some cleaver ideas to do this.  Mickie used burlap that was applied to wood and old steel bed springs for a partial wall.  Love that she hung ironstone plates on it.

I could tell they had sold good because their booth was pretty empty.  If you know them, they can pack it in.  I still managed to find a few treasures with them.  As a reminder, they will continue their Accumulations Vintage Home and Garden Fair again in October, tentatively around the weekend of Halloween.  So please keep watching for details.  Their show will again be in Driftwood.

Next, we saw Denis of Ruby Grace:
I loved what he did in this display.  You can't go wrong with clocks and Raindeer moss.

He had so many fun things in his booth:

This was the new vendor, Brenda I had mentioned from the previous post:
Her booth was so interesting.  Such pretty handmade things.

Here's more of her booth:
She said she's located in the Homestead store in Fredricksburg and no she doesn't have a website.

Moving on to Linda's booth:
There's Ludmil, hard at work.

Of course Linda had pretty things:

I had to include this picture of the walls that Ludmil builds and brings to the shows:
Aren't they fabulous.

Next, I stopped by to see Amy of Bloom and Bee Swanky:

She had such pretty mannequins that she said had hats and other things which all sold the day before.

Look at this wonderful table she had:
With her signature candles on it.  They smell so wonderful, espcially the lemon grass one.

Here is Gloria of The Sweet Pea's booth:
She's now carrying beautiful linen clothes, which can be found in Winnie and Tulula's in Athen's.

She had pillows piled in a daybed:

The Winnie & Tulula crew are having a sale on June 5th at the store.  Be sure and check out the details on their blog.

Next up was Dorthy of The Shabby Y's booth:
She had such interesting displays.  Lamps that were recreated from slips and cups and different things.

Here's another great idea:
Repurposed broches that now hang on pearls, so pretty.

If you were looking for pearls, she had them:

Finally, I stopped back at Felecia's booth:
Look how pretty her booth looks.

She was set up with her sister-in-law Mandy of A La Parisiene:

In case you don't know, Felecia makes the most pretty things, pillows, cones, and many other things:
Wasn't that a great trophy.

Look at this beautiful cone:

My final destination was the Hico Store:

Such interesting displays:

Pretty things were everywhere:

I'm always drawn to flags:

They previously had the white store that I mentioned in the post about Hico, but was told they've closed that store.  Hope you enjoyed the tour and will plan to come out to their next event in October.  If you want to see more of the displays, click here.

Hico Show Preview

To say that the Hico Show was fantastic would be an understatement.  All the vendors worked so hard to put together some of their best displays.  And from talking with them, they seemed to have had a good show.  Since we just got home and I'm pretty beat, here's a quick preview.

Dorothy of The Shabby Y

This was what was left of Micki and Brandy's space.

Denis of Ruby Grace

Amy of Bloom and Bee Swanky

Linda of Willow Nest Farms

Felecia of Bountiful

The Homestead Store

And, a new Vendor from Fredricksburg, Brenda from Penn River Designs

Here's Felecia with Micki:

Besides, I also want to show you what I found today.  More to follow tomorrow.

Rich With History

One of the many benefits of attending the Heap Show on Thursday was getting to spend time with Mo and Janet, shop with the girls, but also getting to see Mo's House after hearing so much about it was such a treat.  Mo said her home was built in the 30's and they were only the third family to live in it.  She even had an old newspaper article that showed how the house was before.  The drive way was positioned at the front of the house rather than the side as it is now.  There were these huge iron gates that led up to the house, which are no more.  Makes you wonder what happened to the gates.  The house sits on a hill and is just so beautiful.  It's a tudor style home that's most definately rich in history.

While the home may have many stories to tell of past families that lived in it, the stories that Mo has of the things she has in it was just so interesting.  As she put it, they kept everything.  From drawings that her children made to items her mother made when they were growing up.

Her mother is a true artist.  Seeing some of her work was just such a treasure.  Actually, this whole family is a treasure.  The Partridge Family doesn't have anything on the Jones/McSwane/Romaine family, they are as genuine as genuine gets!  Just ask anyone.  They are the real deal.

The first place I saw when I walked into Mo's house was the kitchen.  Let me tell you she had this cute purse hanging on the outside door.  As you walk in, there are vintage metal houses all on the top of the shelves and ironstone was in several shelves as sell.  And loving ironstone as I do, she had to just about peal me away from just staring at her collection.  See what I mean:

And this was just a small portion of it.

See here's more and this cabinet was in her bedroom, which you'll see more of in a second:

This cute plate rack was in her upstairs hall way:
Love that she hung things from the plate rack.

Here's more awesome ironstone:
Makes you wish you could follow her shopping, right.

This is another view of her kitchen shelves:

Now let me just add, not only could ironstone be found here, but there was chintz dishes before it became hot  and collectible, transferware dishes like I've never seen, majolica, and so much more:

I really loved these pitchers:

More pretty things:

I know this picture isn't clear, but this collection of doll dresses was done by her mother and then framed.  What a cute idea:

Let's move on to her bedroom:

Look at this comfy chair, the fabric she had saved just for the right piece:

And isn't this a cute idea, a water sprinkler as a jewelry holder:

There was so much more pictures I took, but sorry they didn't come out clear enough to post.  I'm really going to have to break down and get a new camera.  She had this patriotic room that was just gorgeous.  There were old flag pics and just so much to see.  I got to stay in the Mexican Room as she called it.  It was full of vintage Mexican pottery and the room was painted orange, a pretty orange to match her hand done Mexican throws that were in there.  Sorry Mo I know you had a name for them but right now I can't seem to remember it.  I felt like I was at a resort while staying there.  The bed was so comfy and I just felt so rested upon waking.

If you do not know Mo or Janet, you really need to get to know them.  You can find Mo at the Marburger Farm show in the Spring and Fall and Janet is at the Cole's Antique Show.  I had the best time visiting with them and meeting Mo's family was such a treat as well.  Even her fur babies were cute, yes even Ms. Coach even though she really didn't allow me to pet her.

Happy Mother's Day Mo!!  Thanks again for opening your beautiful home to me.

Thank you so much for following:
