I've had a black corgi for almost 5 years and have loved her so. She died early this morning. I noticed this past week, she just wasn't her spunky happy dancing self. She would always greet you with with a wagging tail and my husband said she looked like she was dancing. She was so sweet, very loving. But when I realized something was terribly wrong with her, I quickly took her to the vet. He said either someone poisoned her (I really can't image this happening because she was just too sweet to everyone) or she got a hold of a rodent that had ate rat poison. I so hoped she would make it and while I will miss her dancing self, I'm glad she's not suffering anymore. Yesterday, I noticed she hadn't eaten anything and her breathing seemed hard. I checked on her all night and this morning she seemed to be resting, but when I went back into the room to check on her I could just tell...
I had wanted a corgi for as long as I can remember first seeing one at Tasha Tudor's home and in her books. The first time I saw the add for her it read, free to good home, mom is a brown corgi and dad is a black wandering dog. I instantly fell in love with her. She was so cute and rolly polly. I pondered on what to name her and Sally Jane just seem to fit, but we always just called her "girl". It's funny how attached you grow to animals, like family. I will MISS you Sally Jane!!
Thank you to each and everyone that has left me such sweet and heartfelt comments. I am so appreciative to you all!!

Dear Theresa, I am so sorry. Thinking of you. Debbie
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear about your loss...especially when so unexpected! Here's to you Ms. Sally Jean...xo...deb
ReplyDeleteTheresa, How awful! My heart is breaking for you. It is so hard to lose a beloved pet but in such a sudden and too early way is much harder. She looks like she was a dear. Dogs are especially hard to say good bye to because their whole existence seems to revolve around giving and receiving love. We lost our 7 year old lab to cancer on New Years day 2 years ago, it came up suddenly and in a day she had to be put down. I'm glad it was quick for her but I sure wasn't ready. Losing a dog to aging is hard enough but a younger one is so sad. I hope you have the strength to find another dog to love, it sure helps. Animals are one of God's great gifts to us and dogs top my list. I will be thinking of you, Pam
ReplyDeleteBlessings to you Teresa, I am so sorry that your sweet Sally Jane has passed. We have been through this with several of our pooches and it's always hard. I pray that you are comforted in her absence.

ReplyDeleteOh, Theresa...I am so, so sorry.
ReplyDelete:( I can tell you loved her a lot. She knew it!

I am sooo sorry.
ReplyDeleteTheresa, you are in my thoughts, and a tear in my eye. My Sadie Girl had the same thing happen to her about 2 years ago. Lucily my vet got to her in time, gave her a blood transfusion and saved her. It was a long recovery. My schnauzer will get into anything in the yard, they thought she got a mouse or bird that had gotten into poison. I know you feel like your heart has been ripped out. I will be thinking of you....I know you will miss her!
ReplyDeleteTheresa...I am so sorry to hear about your dear Sally Jane ...I have lost beloved dogs and I know how you feel! Thinking of you - take care. Angie

As I sat reading blogs this morning with my own Corgi, Coco, by my side, I came to your blog and saw the picture of the sweet dog. "Ooh, a dog story,"I thought. But the story wasn't a happy one and it made me quite sad to learn what had happened to Sally Jean, I think perhaps even more so since Coco was there "reading" stories with me.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard when you lose a pet and I'm so very sorry, Theresa, to hear that you have lost your dear Sally Jean.
Theresa, I am so sorry about your "girl". I am sad and my heart is heavy for your loss...you are in my thoughts and prayers. The loss of a pet is like losing a family member. Our furbabies so quickly become a companion and friend, a part of our life and family. She will wait faithfully for you at Rainbow Bridge and join you once again. I feel your pain...

I am sooooooooooo sorry to hear of your loss. Bless your hearts, I know it's so hard losing a sweet pet like that.
ReplyDeleteHeartfelt blessings your way. Being a huge animal lover and rescuer, my heart breaks a little each time a beloved pet leaves a loving home. It is a beautiful thing she is no longer suffering and that she had warm hearts surrounding her.
ReplyDeleteOh, that is so sad! It should comfort you to know that you gave Sally Jane a loving home for so many years! I will be thinking of you!
ReplyDeleteMalisa
Theresa, you are on my mind. I am truly so sad for you. This "poem" came to my mind...thought you might like to read it.
ReplyDeleteJust this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

ReplyDelete"Lend Me A Puppy"
I will lend you for a while
a puppy, God said.
For you to love while she lives,
and mourn when she is dead
Maybe for twelve or fourteen years,
or maybe two or three.
But will you, till I call her back,
take care of her for me?
She'll bring her charm to gladden you and should her stay be brief,
you'll always have her memories
as solace for your grief.
I cannot promise she will stay,
since all from earth return, but there are lessons taught below
this puppy is to learn.
I've looked the whole world over
in search of teachers true,
and from all the folks on earth
I have chosen you.
Now will you give her all your love, not think the labor vain?
Nor hate me when I come to take
my puppy home again?
And my heart replied,
"My Lord, that will be done."
For all the joys this puppy brings,
The risk of grief I'll run.
We'll shelter her with tenderness,
We'll love her while we may,
And for the happiness we've known,
Forever grateful stay.
But should you call her back Much sooner than we planned,
We'll brave the bitter grief that comes, And try to understand.
If by our love we've managed
Your wishes to achieve,
In memory of her sweet love,
Please help us while we grieve
When our cherished puppy departs
this world of stress and strife,
please send yet another needing soul to love for all her life.
Theresa, I'm so sad for the loss of your sweet dog - she had a beautiful little face! I know you must have loved her very much. I'm also sure that she must have had a very happy life living with you! She may be gone, but she'll never be forgotten!
ReplyDeleteHugs,

A Dog's Purpose
Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their little boy, Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.
I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the
family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the e uthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home. As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.
The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know why."
Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.
He said, "People are born so that they can learn how to live a
good life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?" The six-year-old continued, "Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."
Theresa, I am so sorry for your loss. The love our pets give is so special. Take care,
ReplyDeleteRenee

ReplyDeleteTheresa, I just read this post and I'm so sorry for your loss... Sally Jane is so beautiful. I've been through this same thing with a few of my own this past year and I can tell you that time will eventually lessen the grief. I especially related to the fact that she was your "girl."
