He Loved Her More Than Himself

Have you actually witnessed a love story in person, none like you've never seen before?  You wonder what's their secret to their successful marriage.  I know in the beginning of relationships there's all the lovey dovey feelings you show toward your significant other but as the years, circumstances, children, things, life well, sometimes that love just takes a back seat and before you know it you are going your separate ways, doing things in a different direction than the other.  I know not all relationships are this way and while love goes through so many stages through the years it's the ones that can hang on after it's all said and done that could be defined as a love story.

I'm actually talking about a different kind of love story, I guess.  It's hard for me to put into words because when you actually witness it it's just different and hard to put down into words.  Today would have marked my aunt and uncle's Anniversary.  Let me tell you about their "love story".  They married on December 10, 1925.  Doesn't that sound like a lifetime ago.  They didn't have much money and he couldn't buy her a wedding band initially, but that didn't matter to her.  He was 25, she was 20.   Today I proudly own her wedding ring.  That's one of the few things growing up that I asked her if one day I could have.  Her wedding ring and her vases from England and that's just what I got.  Made me so very happy.

Growing up I never saw them argue or fight, no not once.  If they did, they did it in privacy.  Whatever she said he did, no questions asked.  One day I asked him, after watching them for many years, how come he would never tell her NO or just disagree with her.  He said with a smile in a very loving voice, because she's always right!  After being married for so many years, 63 years to be exact before he died, they still held hands, they always kissed each other, and they just seemed like love birds. These kind of marriages are rare.  You just don't see this kind of love today.

He seemed to love her more than himself is what I always thought.  He made her happy and she made him equally as happy.  She always prepared his favorite meals and making sure after he'd worked a long day that they took time to spend it with each other.  He would put her needs first before his, but I think this action was equal on both parts.  I talk how he showed her love but she too was always doing loving things for him, maybe I just noticed it more on his part.  They just seemed to adore each other.  I honestly can't say that I've ever seen another couple be so in love like them.  As they got older, I used to think how lost he would be if she died first, but maybe God saw this too, so he went first.  My aunt actually outlived her entire family, she was the last one to die.

Today, if they were here we would have a big celebration for their Anniversary, I always made sure it was special for them since they didn't have any children or grand children to celebrate with them.  I'm sure they are celebrating in Heaven today!

  3. This type of love is the truest of all and one that everyone should aspire to attract. Their love was obviously built on a mutual respect, a desire to make the other more happy than themselves, and an appreciation and acceptance of who each other were. This was, and remains, a love between souls therefore it is everlasting... Thankyou for sharing and proving that it really does exist..Tellarni

  7. What a great post, made me cry!
Sounds like they were such a wonderful couple, that kind of love is very rare.
I am so happy you got her wedding band. My grandmother NEVER owned a diamond, and I am sure starting off she didn't even have a wedding band either but she did eventually get one. Anyway, a few months before she passed away she walked in and handed me her wedding band and said maybe you can use this one day. I was so proud that was the ring my husband slipped on my finger on our wedding day, to this day I wear it with my diamond engagement ring and believe me ... that gold band means the world to me. :-) This coming January 1st will be 14 years that my grandmother has been gone.

  11. That is the sweetest love story! I hope my children and grandchildren can say something similar about my husband and me. I do know my husband and I daily show and state in words how much we love each other. We are blessed to have that sort of relationship.

Your blog is a new find for me; found through Sweet Old Vintage's site. I am so glad I came by except that it's after midnight and I've GOT to get offline or be a zombie at work tomorrow haha I will definitely be back though to get caught up. I'll be following your blog from now on.

I'd like to invite you to my blog giveaway at My 100th blog post giveaway. The drawing is Wednesday, the 16th and I'm hoping to have lots of entries. I'm always wanting to meet new blog friends and this is a great chance to do just that.

    Have a great Friday!!

  16. What a lovely post. It reminded me of something...
When my husband and I were returning from our honeymoon, on the plane we watched a movie where the husband died. I said to him, "I don't know what I'd do if you died." He kissed me gently and whispered so sweetly, "Don't worry. I'll let you go first". I know, it's funny and it sounds kinda rude but it was so reassuring to me. That he loved me enough to be without me so that I wouldn't have to be without him.

Thanks for sharing your aunt and uncle's story.

    Blessings... Polly

  28. This is one of the best blog stories I have ever read. It is so beautiful and seems so easy to emulate. You can just see the years of love and peace that they had together. How wonderful is that???
How blessed are you to see that over the years for yourself! What a blessing, I did see it also with my Mother and Father-law. The same thing, they lived to please each other. It was wonderful to see. They both loved the Lord first and then each other and their family. They were blessed by God. Merry Christmas to you and your lovely family. sandi
